Humphead Wrasse (Cheilinus undulatus) and diver at Shark Reef in Fiji

Description: The Humphead Wrasse, also known as the Napoleon Wrasse or Cheilinus undulatus, is a magnificent inhabitant of the seas. This majestic fish can grow to over two meters in length and is mainly found in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. Living along the reef edges, it encounters divers with great curiosity and friendliness. At night, it retreats to its sleeping cave, making it vulnerable to uncontrolled fishing. Unfortunately, the population of the Humphead Wrasse has declined significantly due to its popularity as a delicacy. The use of cyanide in fishing has devastating effects on the reef ecosystem. Large specimens are becoming increasingly rare as monitoring fishing activities proves to be extremely challenging.
