Explore the Beauty of the Sea and Midway Atoll

Lonely and remote, the Midway Atoll lies 1200 miles northwest of Honolulu, 2800 miles west of San Francisco, and 2200 miles from Japan amidst vast waters. When you hear the word South Seas, you imagine wide, white beaches, a turquoise lagoon, and green vegetation. All these features can be easily found here at Midway Atoll. Add to that the almost always deep blue Midway sky, sometimes decorated with small white clouds. The clear water in the lagoon plays with unexpected colors. Turquoise is definitely among them. The southern tip of Africa, on the other hand, is known for sudden storms with hurricane-force winds and high waves. During my many stays here, I have encountered storms with wave heights of up to eight meters. Sometimes I had to wait 10 days for the storm to calm down and allow for an outing. The waters around Cape Agulhas are extremely rich in fish. They are considered very dangerous for navigation due to the inhospitable coast with many reefs. Since the mid-17th century, it is said that 140 sunken ships lie here in the “Graveyard of Ships”.
