Description: Polar Bear/Ursus maritimus: Polar Bears in typical postures in play fighting. The Polar Bear, scientifically known as Ursus maritimus, inhabits all Arctic coast regions. The Inuit call it “Nanook” and attribute supernatural powers to it. With a weight of 300 to 600 kilograms and a length of up to 3.5 meters, the Polar Bear is an impressive predator. Its white to yellowish fur converts 95 percent of ultraviolet radiation into heat. Each transparent and hollow fur hair captures light from all directions. Polar bears are excellent swimmers and divers, able to hunt prey even in open waters. Their diet consists mainly of meat, but also seaweed, crabs, birds, and berries. Churchill in Manitoba, Canada is the “Polar Bear Capital of the World” and a popular spot for observing Polar Bears.
