Description: The Indian lionfish, also known as Pterois miles, is a sight to behold as it gracefully swims through the reef with its erect dorsal and spread pectoral fins. Divers in the Red Sea can encounter this beautiful creature on almost every dive, especially at sunrise and sunset. Despite its peaceful demeanor, the lionfish has venomous spines that it uses for defense when threatened. This Pacific species is also referred to as Pterois volitans.
