African Penguins on Dyer Island in South Africa

Description: African Penguins (Spheniscus demersus) breed on Dyer Island, located six sea miles off the coast of Gansbaai in South Africa. The ruins of a former guano station are still visible. Seal beaters and penguin hunters arrived on the island after the guano supplies were depleted. Penguins were hunted for their oil until 1919. The population in South Africa declined due to overfishing. African Penguins are now fully protected on Dyer Island. Only conservationists and biologists reside on the island at times.
