African Penguins on Dyer Island - Conservation and Protection of Wildlife (00000576)

African penguin (Spheniscus demersus)

Description: The African penguin, also known as the Spheniscus demersus, is a threatened species of penguin. These fascinating birds breed on Dyer Island in the Western Cape of South Africa. The island is a protected area where rare seabirds also reside. In the past, African penguins were hunted for their oil, leading to a significant decline in their population. Fortunately, they are now protected under the Washington Convention and the wildlife on Dyer Island is fully preserved. Only a few individuals, such as a conservation officer and occasionally a biologist, have access to this unique island.
