Description: African Penguins (Spheniscus demersus) and other rare seabirds breed on Dyer Island, six sea miles off the coast of Gansbaai in South Africa. The ruins of a former guano station can still be seen. Penguins were once hunted for their oil until this practice was stopped in 1919. The population of African Penguins in South Africa is declining, and they are listed as an endangered species. The island and its fauna and flora are now completely protected, with only conservationists and biologists residing there.
