African Penguins and rare seabirds on the protected Dyer Island in South Africa (00003566)
Description: The African Penguins, also known as Spheniscus demersus, breed on the remote Dyer Island off the coast of South Africa. The island is home to these fascinating birds as well as rare seabirds. In the past, the island was used for guano mining, with only ruins remaining today. Tragically, the island was also targeted by seal hunters and penguin hunters. This dark period ended in 1919 when the brutal penguin massacre was halted. The population of African Penguins in South Africa has been declining, mainly due to overfishing of their food sources. Thanks to the Washington Treaty, this endangered species is now protected. Dyer Island and its unique wildlife are fully protected today, with only a few conservationists living here.
