Description: The Hawaiian monk seal, also known as Monachus schauinslandi, is a fascinating species considered to be a 'living fossil'. These rare seals inhabit the Midway Atoll in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands. With only about 60 individuals on remote and uninhabited islands, the species is critically endangered. Hawaiian monk seals reach an impressive length of 2 meters and weigh between 200-300 kilograms. Their diet mainly consists of reef fish, octopuses, and lobsters that they hunt in shallow waters. These sensitive animals are extremely vulnerable to human impacts and are fighting for survival.
