Description: The Hawaiian monk seal, also known as Monachus schauinslandi, is a fascinating creature. With only about 60 individuals on Midway Atoll, it is a critically endangered species. These seals, found exclusively in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands, can grow up to two meters in length and weigh between 200-300 kilograms. Their diet mainly consists of reef fish, octopuses, and lobsters which they hunt in both shallow waters and the open sea. Hawaiian monk seals are extremely sensitive to human impacts and are on the brink of extinction.
