Discover the fascinating Hawaiian Monk Seal on the beach (00006863)
Description: The Hawaiian monk seal, also known as Monachus schauinslandi, is a fascinating creature that appears almost mythical. Around 60 of these seals inhabit the Midway Atoll, a remote island group in the northwestern Hawaiian Islands. With a length of up to two meters and a weight ranging from 200-300 kilograms, these seals feed on a variety of marine life including reef fish, octopuses, and lobsters. However, Hawaiian monk seals are highly endangered and extremely sensitive to human impacts. There are three distinct species of monk seals, including the Hawaiian, Caribbean, and Mediterranean monk seals.
