Description: The Hawaiian monk seal, also known as Monachus schauinslandi, is a fascinating creature that appears like a living fossil. With approximately 60 individuals residing in Midway Atoll, it is a true rarity. This species of seal lives exclusively on the remote, uninhabited islands in the northwest of the Hawaiian archipelago. Measuring up to two meters in length and weighing between 200 and 300 kilograms, monk seals feed on a variety of marine creatures, including reef fish, octopuses, and lobsters.
