South African Fur Seals in the Surf

Description: The South African fur seals, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, are fascinating marine creatures. Here they are seen in the surf, close to the coast of Gansbaai. The seal colony on Geyser Rock is home to around 36,000 animals, who are safe both on land and in the shallow waters near the island. However, when they venture out to sea on their fishing expeditions, they must navigate a dangerous zone where Great White Sharks lurk. These seals hold a special significance for the sharks, which only diminishes once the seals safely return to land.
