Fascinating Fur Seals on Geyser Rock in South Africa (00000505)
Description: The South African fur seals, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, inhabit Geyser Rock. Located about six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai are the islands of Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. Geyser Rock is home to an impressive colony of fur seals, numbering around 36,000 individuals. These seals are relatively safe as long as they stay close to the island. However, when they venture out into the open sea for their fishing expeditions, they enter a danger zone where White Sharks lurk. The seals are a crucial part of the sharks' diet, which is why they must be extremely cautious on their way to and from the island. The high concentration of White Sharks in this area is directly linked to the large seal colony.
