Charming South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock in Western Cape (00000509)
Description: The South African fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) inhabit Geyser Rock, a small island located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai in the Western Cape. The colony consists of approximately 36,000 seals, feeling safe as long as they stay on land or in the shallow waters near the island. However, during their fishing trips to the open sea, they have to navigate through the danger zone where White Sharks lurk, specifically targeting the seal colony. The seals play a crucial role in the ecosystem, attracting the sharks until they return safely to land. The presence of the White Sharks is directly linked to the fur seal colony.
