South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock (00000513)
Description: The South African fur seals, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, inhabit Geyser Rock. Located about six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai are two small islands, Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. Geyser Rock is home to an impressive seal colony of approximately 36,000 individuals. While the seals are safe on land and in the shallow waters near the island, venturing out to sea for fishing exposes them to the danger of Great White Sharks that prey on the seal colony. Returning to the island poses risks for the seals as they have to navigate through the perilous zone once again. The significant presence of Great White Sharks in the area is directly linked to the seal colony.
