Mesmerizing Fur Seal Colony on Geyser Rock in South Africa (00000514)
Description: The fur seal colony on Geyser Rock in South Africa is a mesmerizing natural spectacle. Located approximately six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai, the two small islands of Dyer Island and Geyser Rock are home to a massive colony of around 36,000 South African fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus). While the seals are relatively safe when near the island, venturing into the open sea for hunting exposes them to the dangerous territory of the Great White Sharks, who prey on the seal colony. These predators hold a special affinity for the seals, turning each seal's return journey into a perilous endeavor.
