South African Fur Seals in the Surf

Description: The South African Fur Seals, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, are captivating marine creatures that inhabit the islands of Dyer Island and Geyser Rock near Gansbaai. This colony consists of approximately 36,000 animals that are safe on land and in shallow waters. However, when swimming to their fishing grounds, they must navigate the perilous passage through waters where Great White Sharks lurk. These sharks have a special affinity for seals and pose a real threat. The fur seals return from their dives and can only breathe a sigh of relief once they are safely back on land. The allure of this seal colony for the Great White Sharks is a fascinating phenomenon.
