South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock

Description: The South African Fur Seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, calls Geyser Rock home, a rocky island located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai in the Western Cape, South Africa. The fur seal colony on Geyser Rock consists of an impressive 36,000 individuals. While these protected animals navigate safely on land and in shallow waters, the danger lurks in the open sea when they go out fishing and encounter White Sharks. The high concentration of White Sharks in the area is attributed to the abundant seal population.

Location: Western Cape, Gansbaai/Geyser Rock, South Africa

Date of Capture: 16.05.2001
