South African fur seal spotted on Geyser Rock island (00000327)

South African fur seal lifts its head over the water

Description: The South African fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) is spotted on the rocky Geyser Rock island near Dyer Island. With a colony of approximately 60,000 animals, they are safe on land and in the shallow waters. However, when venturing out for fishing in the open sea, they must face the dangers posed by Great White Sharks. Diving up to 50 meters deep, they can stay underwater for up to five minutes. The presence of the seal colony attracts the Great White Sharks, who lurk for the incoming seals.
