Encounter with the South African Fur Seal on Geyser Rock in the Western Cape (00000488)

South African Fur Seal on Geyser Rock

Description: The South African fur seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, inhabits Geyser Rock. This rocky island is located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai in the Western Cape, South Africa. The colony consists of approximately 36,000 seals that are safe on land and in shallow waters. However, when they venture out to sea for fishing, they must navigate a dangerous zone where Great White Sharks lurk. This makes their return to land a risky endeavor. The high concentration of Great White Sharks in the area is attributed to the presence of the seal colony.

Location: Western Cape, Gansbaai/Geyser Rock, South Africa
