Fascinating South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock (00000493)
Description: The South African fur seals on Geyser Rock, also known as Arctocephalus pusillus, inhabit the rocky island located approximately six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai. The colony consists of around 36,000 animals that live both on land and in the shallow waters near the island. Learn more about the fascinating behavior of these seals and the dangers they face on their fishing expeditions into the open sea. Great white sharks lurk nearby and pose a serious threat, especially when the seals venture away from the safety of the island. The high concentration of great white sharks in the area is directly attributed to the presence of the seal colony.
