Fascinating South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock (00000497)

South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock

Description: The South African fur seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, calls Geyser Rock home. Located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai, this rock is home to an impressive colony of around 36,000 seals. These playful marine creatures are safe as long as they stay close to the island. However, when they venture out to sea for fishing, they must navigate through a dangerous zone where Great White Sharks lurk. These predators have a particular affinity for seals, and the danger persists until the seals safely return to land. The high concentration of Great White Sharks in the area is attributed to the large seal colony.
