Enchanting South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock (00000516)

South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock

Description: The South African Fur Seals on Geyser Rock, also known by their scientific name Arctocephalus pusillus, are fascinating marine creatures. The small rocky island of Geyser Rock, located about six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai, is home to an impressive seal colony of approximately 36,000 animals. These fur seals are renowned for their graceful swimming abilities and social behavior. While on land and in shallow waters near the island, they are safe from dangers. However, when they venture out to sea to hunt, they must traverse a perilous zone where Great White Sharks lurk. The high concentration of Great White Sharks in the area is attributed to the presence of the seal colony. This captivating interaction between predator and prey makes the South African Fur Seals an integral part of the marine ecosystem.
