Fascinating Fur Seals on Geyser Rock in South Africa (00000531)
Description: The South African fur seals (Arctocephalus pusillus) inhabit Geyser Rock, a small island off the coast of Gansbaai. With a colony of around 36,000 animals, they are relatively safe as long as they stay close to the island. However, danger awaits on their fishing expeditions into the open sea: Great white sharks pose a constant threat. The high concentration of predators is directly linked to the presence of the seals, which hold a significant position in the food chain.
