Fascinating Encounter with Fur Seals on Geyser Rock (00003651)
Description: The South African fur seals, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, inhabit Geyser Rock. This rocky island is located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai and is home to an impressive colony of approximately 36,000 seals. While the seals are safe when on land or in the shallow waters near the island, they face a perilous zone when venturing out to sea for fishing. This area is frequented by Great White Sharks, who have a particular affinity for seals. The high concentration of sharks is due to the presence of the seal colony.
