South African Fur Seal on Geyser Rock

Description: The South African fur seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, inhabits Geyser Rock. This rocky island is located six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai in the Western Cape, South Africa. With a colony of approximately 36,000 seals, Geyser Rock is a crucial habitat for these fascinating creatures. While they are safe on land and in shallow waters near the island, they must navigate a perilous passage on their fishing expeditions into the open sea. White sharks lurk in these waters, with seals holding a special significance for them. Only when the seals safely return to land is the danger over. The high concentration of white sharks in the area is closely linked to the seal colony.
