Encounter with the South African fur seals off the coast of South Africa (00015791)
Description: The South African fur seal, scientifically known as Arctocephalus pusillus, is a fascinating marine creature that inhabits the waters off the coast of South Africa. This species of seal lives in a large colony of approximately 60,000 animals on the rocky island of Geyser Rock, near Dyer Island. When the South African fur seals stay on land and in shallow waters, they are safe from dangers. However, when they venture into the open sea for food, diving deep and remaining vigilant for the feared Great White Sharks becomes crucial. This relationship between seals and sharks is of great importance to the ecosystem. The high concentration of Great White Sharks in the area is attributed to the large seal colony.
