Severely injured fur seal after attack by Great White Shark before Geyser Rock (00015808)
Description: The South African fur seal (Arctocephalus pusillus) was seriously injured by a Great White Shark. Just off the coast of Gansbaai, the shark attacked the seal and cleanly severed its body with a single bite. Despite the injury, the seal managed to escape, but its chances of survival are slim. Dyer Island and Geyser Rock are located six nautical miles from the coast and are home to a large seal colony. As the seals venture out to sea for their fishing trips, they must navigate a dangerous zone where Great White Sharks lurk. The high concentration of sharks in this area is due to the seal colony.
Location: Western Cape, Gansbaai/Geyser Rock, South Africa
