A green sea turtle (Chelonia mydos) explores the beach of Eastern Island (00006841)
Description: The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydos) is a fascinating creature that can be found on the beach of Eastern Island. Once abundant, these majestic animals are now critically endangered. With only about 200,000 green sea turtles left worldwide, conservation efforts are crucial. Every year, between 200-350 female turtles come to the nesting beaches of the French Frigate Shoals in the northwest of the Hawaiian Islands to lay their eggs. These nesting grounds play a vital role in the survival of Chelonia mydos.
