In rough seas, a green sea turtle raises its head above water (00006847)
Description: The green sea turtle (Chelonia mydos) gracefully swims at the surface of the open sea. There used to be millions of these majestic creatures inhabiting the oceans, but today there are only an estimated 200,000 green sea turtles left worldwide. Every year, between 200 and 350 female turtles come to the nesting beaches of the French Frigate Shoals in the northwest of the Hawaiian Islands to lay their eggs and preserve the species. There, they are protected, as Chelonia mydos is critically endangered.
