Description: The green sea turtle, scientifically known as Chelonia mydos, is a fascinating creature that once numbered in the millions. Nowadays (as of 2001), there are only about 200,000 of these majestic animals left worldwide. Every year, hundreds of turtle females come to the nesting beaches of the French Frigate Shoals in the northwest of the Hawaiian Islands.
