A Great White Shark (Carcharodon carcharias) right beneath the water surface. The triangular characteristic dorsal fin is sticking out of the water. (00014463)
Description: The great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias) breaks through the water surface six nautical miles off the coast of Gansbaai, near Dyer Island and Geyser Rock. Its distinctive dorsal fin is a unique feature of recognition. US biomechanics have deciphered the function of the shark fin, which contributes to the shark's mobility. The swirls of current created by the enlarged fin were analyzed. These enhance the shark's vertical maneuverability. The asymmetrical shape of the fin stabilizes the shark during lateral and vertical movements (Wissenschaft 20/08/2004).
