Red Mangroves in Fiji: Habitat and Protection for Marine Life (00017938)

Red Mangroves in brackish water of Viti Levu, Fiji

Description: The Red Mangroves (Rhizophora mangle L.) thrive in the brackish waters of the Qara-ni-Qio River on the island of Viti Levu in Fiji. These trees and shrubs, reaching heights of up to 30 meters, are uniquely adapted to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. They serve as crucial nurseries for numerous reef fish and invertebrates, providing ideal hiding spots in the murky waters. Mangrove forests are of great ecological importance as they store, produce, and release nutrients into the sea. Unfortunately, mangroves are severely threatened, with half of the world's mangrove forests already destroyed.
