Description: The red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle L.) is a fascinating tree species that thrives in dense stands along the Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji. These mangroves can reach heights of up to 30 meters and have adapted perfectly to the conditions of salty coastlines and brackish river mouths. They serve as a vital habitat for a variety of marine life and act as a nursery for numerous fish species. Mangroves play a crucial role in the ecosystem by storing, producing, and releasing nutrients into the sea. Unfortunately, mangroves are highly endangered globally, with estimates suggesting that half of the world's mangrove forests have already been destroyed.
