The red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle L.) - a vital link between land and sea. (00017903)
Description: The red mangrove (Rhizophora mangle L.) is a fascinating tree species that has adapted perfectly to the extreme conditions of salty coasts and brackish river mouths. These trees, reaching up to 30 meters in height, serve as important nurseries for numerous reef fish and invertebrates, providing ideal hiding spots in the murky waters. Mangroves are essential for the ecosystem, as they store, produce, and release nutrients into the sea. Unfortunately, many mangrove forests worldwide are severely threatened, with an estimated 50 percent already destroyed.
