Red Mangroves at Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji (00017906)

Red Mangroves on the shore of Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji

Description: The Red Mangroves (Rhizophora mangle L.) line the shore of Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji. These trees and shrubs, up to 30 meters high, have adapted perfectly to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. They serve as a crucial habitat for many marine creatures and act as nurseries for reef fish and invertebrates. Mangroves are found between the 30th parallel north and south and require warm waters. Their stilt roots slow tidal currents and promote sediment deposition. Mangroves are endangered, with half of the world's mangrove forests already destroyed.
