Red Mangrove Forests on the Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji - Natural Wonder and Conservation Area (00017908)
Description: The red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle L.) form impressive forests along the Qara-ni-Qio River on the island of Viti Levu in Fiji. These trees and shrubs, reaching heights of up to 30 meters, have perfectly adapted to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. They serve as crucial nurseries for numerous reef fish and invertebrates, providing ideal hiding spots in their murky waters. Mangroves play a vital role as a link between land and sea, contributing to the preservation of marine biodiversity. Unfortunately, mangroves are globally endangered, with half of the populations already destroyed.
