Red Mangroves in the discolored water of the Qara-ni-Qio River

Description: The Red Mangroves (Rhizophora mangle) in the discolored water of the Qara-ni-Qio River on Viti Levu, Fiji, are up to 30 meters tall trees and shrubs that have adapted to the conditions of salty coasts and brackish river mouths. These unique trees serve as important nurseries for a variety of reef fish and invertebrates that find shelter in the mangrove forests. Mangroves are crucial for the ecosystem as they slow down tidal currents and facilitate the deposition of mud. Unfortunately, mangroves are severely endangered worldwide, with estimates suggesting that 50 percent of mangrove forests have already been destroyed.
