Description: The red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle L.) lining the shore of the Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji are a fascinating ecosystem. These trees and shrubs, reaching up to 30 meters in height, have adapted perfectly to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. Serving as crucial nurseries, they provide ideal hiding spots for many marine creatures. The extensive stilt roots of mangroves slow down tidal currents, promote sedimentation, and store essential nutrients. Unfortunately, mangroves are severely endangered worldwide.
