The fascinating world of red mangroves along the Qara-ni-Qio River (00017936)
Description: The red mangroves (Rhizophora mangle L.) at the shore of Qara-ni-Qio River in Fiji are up to 30 meters high trees and shrubs that are perfectly adapted to the salty coasts and brackish river mouths. They are an important habitat for many marine creatures and serve as nurseries for reef fish. Mangroves play a crucial role in protecting against erosion and filtering pollutants. However, these unique ecosystems are highly endangered, with an estimated half of the world's mangrove forests already destroyed.
