Encounter with Danger: The Blue Bottle in Gansbaai, Western Cape, South Africa (00016665)
Description: The Blue Bottle, also known as Physalia utriculus, is a dangerous and fascinating creature of the oceans. This Portuguese man-of-war is composed of a colony of polyps that cooperate perfectly to survive. When the distinctive, bluish shimmering gas bladder becomes visible, extreme caution is required. The long tentacles of Physalia utriculus can grow up to 10 meters long and are extremely dangerous. With up to 1000 nematocysts per centimeter, they are specialized in capturing and paralyzing prey. My personal experience with a swimmer in Pakistan who came into contact with a Portuguese man-of-war illustrates the life-threatening consequences. Immediate medical treatment is essential in case of injury by this fascinating yet dangerous creature.
