A Majestic Portuguese Man-of-War off the Coast of South Africa (00016686)

Dangerous Beauty: The Portuguese Man-of-War with its Long Tentacles

Description: The Portuguese Man-of-War, also known as Blue Bottle or Physalia utriculus, is a fascinating creature of the ocean. With tentacles reaching up to 10 meters in length, it is an impressive hunter. Its striking blueish gas bladder makes it unmistakable. However, caution is advised as beneath the surface lies danger. The nematocysts on its tentacles are extremely dangerous and can cause serious injuries upon contact. During a stay in Pakistan, I witnessed firsthand a swimmer coming into contact with a Portuguese Man-of-War and narrowly escaping death. Immediate medical attention is essential in case of such an injury.
