Description: Beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) are majestic marine creatures that attract thousands of them to Cunningham Inlet on Somerset Island every July and August. This location is famous for the Beluga migration route that the animals use to gather. With a length of up to six meters and a weight of up to a ton, Belugas are known for their blue-white to creamy skin and their lack of a dorsal fin. Juveniles often have a brown, gray, or even bluish color. They were once referred to as the 'canaries of the sea' because their sounds could be heard by sailors.
