Fascinating Beluga whale fluke on Somerset Island (00020340)
Description: Beluga whale/Delphinapterus leucas A fascinating Beluga whale fluke elegantly emerges from the clear waters of Cunningham Inlet on Somerset Island. The majestic Beluga whale is one of the marine creatures that gather in large groups at this location every July and August. Measuring up to six meters in length and weighing up to a ton, they are impressive Arctic inhabitants. Their bluish-white to creamy skin and the distinctive lack of a dorsal fin make them unmistakable. Young Belugas often display brown, gray, or bluish hues. Formerly referred to as 'canaries of the sea' due to their loud sounds and the characteristic 'smile' on their faces, Belugas are fascinating beings who are unfortunately more threatened by fishing nets today than by whaling.
