Fascinating Beluga Whales at Cunningham Inlet - Somerset Island (00020341)

Beluga Whales at Cunningham Inlet on Somerset Island

Description: Beluga whales, also known as white whales or Delphinapterus leucas, gather every year in July and August at Cunningham Inlet on Somerset Island. This location is a main migratory route for these majestic marine mammals. With a length of up to six meters and weighing up to a ton, beluga whales are fascinating creatures. Their blue-white to creamy-white color and the absence of a dorsal fin make them unmistakable. Their striking tail fluke is a sight to behold. Young belugas often have a brown, gray, or bluish coloration. Sailors used to call them the 'canaries of the sea' because their sounds could be heard through the hulls of ships. Unfortunately, today beluga whales are often victims of fishing nets.
