The scientific name Lycaon pictus means 'Painted Wolf' and refers to the unique spotting pattern of these fascinating creatures. Newborn puppies are born black with irregular white spots that develop into yellow-brown hues as they grow. The African Wild Dog is one of the rarest large predators in Africa, mainly found in large game reserves. Adult African Wild Dogs reach a shoulder height of 60 to 70 centimeters and weigh between 15 and 30 kilograms. These social animals live in packs and inhabit the bush- and tree-covered savannas south of the Sahara.
