African Wild Dog: Information, Photos, and More

The scientific name Lycaon pictus of the African Wild Dogs means 'Painted Wolf' and refers to the dogs' spotted markings. Puppies are born black with irregular white spots. Yellow-brown tones only appear later on. The African Wild Dog is currently the rarest large predator in Africa. Adult African Wild Dogs reach a shoulder height of 60 to 70 centimeters and a weight of 15 to 30 kilograms. These animals - living in packs - inhabit the bush and tree-filled savannas of Africa south of the Sahara. The African Wild Dogs are highly endangered and are now mostly found in large wildlife reserves. Lycaon pictus
