Fascinating concreting of the concrete head at North Breakwater in Richards Bay, Natal, South Africa (00092043)
Description: The concreting of the concrete head at North Breakwater in the port of Richards Bay, Natal, South Africa, is an impressive engineering feat. The surface of the stone filling lies at 3.0 m above tidal low water and is exposed to the roaring waves. Only after the massive concrete head, 8.0 m wide and 2.40 m thick, is completed, can the powerful Manitowoc 4600 continue its operation. The placement of the heavy steel formwork and the pouring of the concrete are carried out with precision and efficiency. The steel formwork was specifically designed to transfer the weight of the Manitowoc onto the stone filling, allowing the crane to drive onto the freshly poured block immediately after concreting.
