Great Frigatebird on a dry branch

Description: The Great Frigatebird, scientifically known as Fregata minor palmerstoni, is a fascinating inhabitant of Eastern Island. With a wingspan of about two meters and a weight of less than two kilograms, they are impressive aerial acrobats. These birds mainly feed on flying fish, but also hunt squid and other surface-dwelling fish. Newly hatched sea turtles and seabird chicks are particularly vulnerable. As notorious pirates of the skies, they lurk on other seabirds and snatch the prey in a steep dive before it reaches the water.

Location: Hawaiian Islands, Midway, USA

Date of Capture: 19.07.2001
